Realisations and lessons learnt! August 7, 2007

Here are a few things that I have learnt/realised in past one month of living away from home!

1. Living at 8th floor doesn’t mean that monkeys cant climb to your balcony,so leaving the balcony doors open isnt a good idea(though I still wonder why and how the monkey did that!).
2. Pieces of onion will smell really bad if left for more than 24 hours and even the smallest one is sufficient to make the whole kitchen smell of rotten onions.
3. It will be really difficult to dispose off rice(or daliya/sabzi etc) if they are left for more than 24 hours in the vessel in which they were cooked. And your flatmate will hate to do it as much as you!
4. It isn’t difficult to clean your home yourself especially if its mostly empty.
5. It isnt difficult to force open the lift doors(atleast the ones used in our building) if the electricity goes off when you are inside(or maybe we were just lucky :) )
6. I prefer climbing 8 stories through stairs rather than using lift when someone is inside the lift with two dogs!
7. I prefer climbing 2-3 stories rather than using lift even if there are no dogs :P
8. Liquid blue (like ujala) works wonders with your white clothes and should always be used.
9.Its very easy to skip food when u have to cook it yourself(or go 2-3kms to fetch it!)

We (me and my flatmate) shifted to our new home today and the whole day we were running from one place to another to buy all the odd household stuff( and to complete a few formalities to finalize the deal). I wish I could write about all this in detail but its quite late and am too tired to write a long post!
So, in short, two young (and totally unexperienced in this regard)guys spent the whole day trying to get all the stuff needed to convert a “flat” into “home”. Though I feel we were quite efficient and managed to get almost all the necessary things( going to “Big Bazaar” helped a lot as we got almost all the things at the same place), but still a lot needs to be done. Have to buy things like cooker, pateela (don’t know what its called in English) , brush to wash bathroom, some kind of table, some kind of almirah (the flat doesn’t have even a single), a matka (to survive until we get fridge),water purifier, curtains etc etc
Have to call plumber and carpenter for minor repairs, have to find some kaam wali and some good place to eat!
Phew!! Am tired and have to wake up early tomorrow for office :( But still somehow it feels good!
Thanx SSS for the helpful tips, will need more of them :)
Hope I will be able to put more details soon!

One week later… June 30, 2007

So, here we are after one week of staying in Gurgaon, and it has been a mixed experience(like always ;) ). Agreed that one week is too short a time to judge any place (esp when you go out rarely like me!)
But, anyways, here is what I think about all the things that I mentioned last week in my expectations(reading the original points below before these will be a better idea):
1.Few roads are really really bad, but then there are lot many which are as good as anywhere else, and looking at the kind of construction thats happening everywhere in Gurgaon, we should give them some some chance!
2.After living for 10-15 years in Chandigarh, power cuts seem highly unbearable,as of now, am staying in guest house which has a huge genset for power backup, so its not a problem as of now. But as soon as i start living in my own flat/room it will be really a big problem and inverter is highest priority item in my list of things to be purchased with home/flat!
3.Malls were a big disappointment. More on that some other day…
4.Haven’t been stuck into any jam in past week but you can say I haven’t been to the busiest places at busiest hours.
5.Didn’t need to find such a place as of now, coz food in guest-house is really nice.
6.This is one biiiiiiig problem esp for bachelor guys :(
7.Hope this won’t be much difficult.
8.Surprisingly (even to me) this is true (almost)!!
9.Nah na :P
10.Yeah!!! There are around 10 stations stored in my phone and though lack of nice speakers means that I don’t listen to them much but still radio is very nice here.
11.Cost isn’t a issue when you are not able to find any when you want!!
More  stuff coming soon ;)

My expectations! June 23, 2007

Now that I will be reaching Gurgaon tomorrow, so its right time to write about my expectations. I have never been there but have heard a lot from others.
Shopping malls, call centres, bad roads, traffic jams, power cuts,MNCs, high rise apartments, DLF are among the most frequently used words whenever anyone talks about Gurgaon. So, here are few of my expectations from the city:
1.The roads wont be as bad as people say.
2.Power cuts will be bearable.
3.Malls will be really nice.
4.Traffic jams will be limited to only a few busy roads/areas.
5.I will be able to find some good (and not-so-costly) eating place!
6.I will be able to find a flat/room at reasonable rate ;)
7.I will be able to make trip back home every other weekend.
8.I will be able to wake up around 6 am and go for walk/jog.
9.I will be able to sleep before 11pm :)
10.Radio stations will be much much better than here in Chandigarh :P
11.Auto-Rickshaws, buses wont be very costly and I wont need to buy new vehicle!

Okey okey, agreed this all is totally wishful thinking, but am sure it will be a nice place to live :)

As a kind of checklist, here is a list of few things that I want to write about pretty soon:

Chandigarh- Well I have lived here for more than 10 years and will be leaving it pretty soon, so will love to write a lot of things about it.
College- The college life is now over, so will definately like to write about the past four years and my experiance here.
Gurgaon- Haven’t been there ever, so first I will try to write about my expectation and then, after reaching there, about my experainces in the new city.
Ubuntu- I have spent a major portion of time in these holidays on ubuntu and needless to say am totally loving it. For the first time I have got a fully functional linux system and have almost replaced Windows!

And maybe a few things more….

Finally a degree holder :) June 22, 2007

Yippeeeeeeee!
Finally the four year degree is over and now I am a certified engineer (the emphasis is on CERTIFIED here ;) ) We had our convocation day before yesterday and now the college life is officially over. I will be joining my new job in Gurgaon on Monday, and leaving Chandigarh Sunday morning. This will be first time I will be living without family and of course the first time when I am not a student anymore!
I want to write about so many things but somehow for past 3-4 weeks have not been able to,everytime I sit on PC,its either some movie, some game, some website, orkut or chatting that takes up all the time! Even though I had almost nothing to do in all the holidays, but somehow I could not make up even a single post. Its really disappointing! I hope I will be able to update this blog more regularly from now on (yeah, I know its no use saying this, but still…)

Why W700i ?? February 25, 2007

At least one person wanted me to write this post ;) so here are the reasons…..

I wanted a phone which is good overall and reasonably good on the camera part. Which means at least 1.2-2MP resolution and flash. Also, expendable memory is a must. And my budget was around 10,000Rs. So, I shortlisted W700i, K750 and Z710i from Sony Ericsson, Dynamite from LG, 6681 from Nokia, Moto Razr. But finally decided on W700i and got it the day before my b’day :)

Here is short list of pros and cons of each model according to me…

K750i

Pros: Really good camera with 2MP, flash, cover and auto-focus.
Cons: Not-so-good looks (according to me), not-so-good music features.
Price:(in Feb 2007,Chandigarh, with bill and warranty) 9900Rs

Z710i

Pros: Nice looks, Flip phone, 2MP camera.
Cons: No auto focus, flash or camera cover, sound quality average.
Price:10880Rs

LG Dynamite

Pros: 2MP camera, Large screen size,Very low price(compared to others).
Cons: Not-so-good looks, very low battery life, no flash, camera cover or auto-focus.
Price:8800 Rs

6681
:

Pros: Nokia brand, Professional looks, Symbian OS, Good flash, 1.2-1.3 MP camera
Cons: Camera not as good as w700 or k750, No radio!
Price: ~10,000Rs

Moto Razr

Pros: Looks,looks and looks
Cons: Camera only 1.2MP, no flash, camera cover or auto focus, no radio.
Price: 8500-9000Rs

Finally, the reasons why I am loooooooooooving my W700i:
Music!!!!!!!!!!!
Afterall its a walkman phone!
Even though music was not very high on my agenda for a mobile phone, and I wasn’t much moved by all the hype behind the walkman series,so it wasn’t the deciding point, but the moment I put the earphones and turned on the “Mega Bass” feature, I was swept away!
Its just awesome! Maybe even better than my Creative speakers with woofers that I have at home….
And now, the main reason for my buying this phone: Great camera, with 2MP resolution, unlimited video capture, good flash, camera lens cover and free 256 MB card…its almost all that I could ask for (except the auto-focus,which is needed only when you take pictures from few centimeters away). Battery life is fine. Screen is very bright and resolution is much better than other similar phones, which means crisper graphics. Radio, java, USB, Bluetooth,IR etc all the standard features are also present. And finally the looks, with its golden colour and a tinge of orange, small and elegant overall build…just perfect for me :)  Last but not least, it was just within my range at 10,700Rs.
So, even though my first mid-sems are starting from this Wednesday, still I cant stop taking pics, listening to music or playing chess on my dear walkman :)
